2009 ROUNDUP by Barbara Ross
That was the year that was — 2009 was a busy year for New England Sisters in Crime!
- In February, we charged out of the gate with our always popular Open
Reading meeting. Eleven sisters read from published books and works in progress.
- In early April, more than 30 sisters took advantage of a free-to-members day-long workshop with editor
extraordinaire Elizabeth Lyon at the Scituate (MA) Public Library.
- The May meeting brought authors Lynne Reeves Griffin and Amy MacKinnon speaking about
“What I Wish I’d Known,” their stories of writing and publication.
- During the summer, five sisters—Rosemary Harris, Toni L.P. Kelner, Clea Simon, Hank Phillippi Ryan
and Sheila Connolly—recommended books for the beach and talked about their own work at a “Beach Reads,” event at
the Wellesley (MA) Booksmith. Also in the summer, we launched our New England Sisters in Crime Facebook Fansite.
- In September, the meeting topic was “Real Women Kick A**: How to Write Fight and Attack Scenes that Work,”
with martial arts expert Leslie Mathews in Hudson, NH. With volunteer support, we also e-mailed 1400+ librarians
to publicize our Speakers Bureau.
- In October, NE/SinC personned a booth with author/signers at the New England Independent Booksellers
Association conference in Hartford (CT). Also in October, four sisters—Jan Brogan, Sheila Connolly, Kate Flora and
Ruth McCarty—spoke on a Halloween-themed panel at the Dedham Public Library.
- November, of course, brought Crime Bake, this year with Keynoter Sue Grafton and record attendance.
- Dana Cameron, Hallie Ephron, and Hank Phillippi Ryan recommended mysteries for holiday gift giving and talked
about their own works at the Barnes & Noble in Peabody, MA. And don’t forget the annual holiday meeting on December 13.
All this while publishing 20+ books, garnering countless nominations and
prizes, holding 30+ Speakers Bureau events and publishing four issues of She
Dunnit! Many thanks to the members, this year’s Board and, especially, 2009
President Rosemary Harris for such a productive and successful year.
There’s plenty more to come in 2010!
